The open-source programming movement is a growing part of the computer software world. Software don't work the way you want it? Fix it yourself! Open-source gives users the power to modify someone else's program as needed. A good thing. But let's face it: sometimes you just don't want people viewing proprietary source code. As a programmer or related business, ask yourself these questions:
  • How can you enforce a software copyright in which anyone and everyone can freely extract your code, use it, and sell it? Sure there's copyright laws you can sue with, but is the time and lawyer fees really worth it?
  • If your company provides technical support, how can your staff help clients with modified code? Unless every person on your support staff is a programming whizz (expensive), your staff will be at a loss to explain why something doesn't work after a customer introduced a bug.

The solution? Is of course to keep your source-code closed. Client systems will work similarly to your test systems, and the potential for loss of revenue will be minimal. But for many scripting languages (i.e. Perl) this is not possible ... until now. The Get Noticed obfuscator makes your Perl code extremely hard for the average Joe to read, yet at the same time ensuring that it can be used.
